The African Bank
African Bank is a commercial bank in South Africa. The bank was licensed by the Reserve Bank of South Africa as a “locally-controlled bank”. It is a subsidiary of the holding company, African Bank Investments Limited (Abil). The bank’s head office is located in Midrand, South Africa. In 2014 they had about 3 million customers.
The bank showed a loss of R3,1 billion in a six-month period until March 2014. On August 10, 2014, the Governor of the Reserve Bank, Gill Marcus, announced that their African Bank was under curatorship. The measure was put in place to protect the bank’s depositors, shareholders, creditors, and clients.
African Bank’s mission is to be a successful retail bank, which offers a wide range of products and services to consumers of South Africa, including unsecured loans, transactional banking, and saving and investments.
The Bank is a 100% subsidiary of African Bank Holdings Limited
The South African Reserve Bank, the Government Employee Pension Fund, and six of the large South African banks are shareholders of the group.
